Virtually Abstract: Kubis & Louie, Pendulum Gallery, Vancouver

New needs need new techniques. The modern artists have found new ways and new means to make their statements. It seems to me that the modern painter cannot express this age in the old forms of the Renaissance or of any other past culture. Each age finds its own techniques

Jackson Pollock, 1950

The approach to abstraction in visual art has covered a lot of ground, from the minimal to the lyrically expressive. The times an artist inhabits can provide a language for their art making. Anda Kubis and Eric Louie provide two examples for our digital age; Kubis with her utilization of paint programs and computer technology to create painterly effects on paper; and Louie, whose use of planes, lines, textures and layering, reflect the influence of ubiquitous rendering and graphic programs that influence our image making, and which Louie absorbs, filters and returns to the canvas in his own personal style.
